Velký Týnec lies about 8 km south-east of Olomouc, at the confluence of the Týnečka and Beroňka streams. The municipality includes Čechovice and Vsisko.

The first written record of the village appears in a 1207 charter of King Přemysl Otakar I. The Baroque castle replaced a Gothic fortress and was altered after a fire in 1779. A pavilion dating from 1755, with frescoes, stands in the castle garden. At Hradisko, about 1.5 km east of the centre, there was an early medieval hillfort; today a 1921 monument to the founding of the republic stands there.
