Dolany lies 9 km north-east of Olomouc and 9 km south of Šternberk. The first written record of the municipality dates from 1235.

The foundations of the Carthusian monastery known as Kartouzka remain on the edge of Dolany, beside the road to Véska. The monks moved there in 1388. Local landmarks include the Church of St Matthew, a garden pavilion in the rectory garden and a column bearing a statue of St John of Nepomuk.
